Shopping for Mom – Research predicts more Mother’s Day spending

While we generally write about Mom as the household buyer-in-chief, we are turning the tables in this post.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) just released the results of a survey on projected spending for Mother’s Day 2010. And NRF is predicting the average spend for Mother’s Day gifts will be $126.90 in 2010, an increase of 2.4% of last year.

Moms will rack up on:

  • Cards – 97%
  • Flowers – 70%
  • Gift cards – 55%
  • Clothing – 36%
  • Jewelry – 25%
  • Books – 22%
  • Spa Services – 15%
  • Electronics – 12%
  • Candy – 5%

Dads and kids will spend a total of $14.6 billion, a 3.5% increase from 2009 at:

  • Specialty retailers (including florists) – 45%
  • Discount retailers – 38%
  • Department stores – 35%
  • Online retailers – 25%
  • Catalog retailers – 20%
